Does anyone know where I might find a comprehensive breakdown of browser usage?

The few I've seen by searching on Google seem always to relate to a particular business.

Browser usage in general? Or browser usage as it pertains to your site?

I found something here:

but it only pertains to sites run by arkom.

And like many other sites, they lump netscape and mozilla together as one, even though they are not one in the same. (Netscape 7 is built on mozilla 1.4).

Statmarket.com gets statistics from all of their clients, which is extensive, but you have to pay to see the stats.

there used to be a site called browserwatch, but its gone now, gobbled up by internet.com and scuttled.

google seems to find a lot of web site's stats pages that should not be spidered, but since they have no robots.txt file, google spiders them. It totally messes up the search on google for web browser usage or web browser statistics.

Only answer I could give that takes relatively no work is awstats. www.awstats.com i think.

I usually draw my own browser/stats information. Simple script with built in function on php and save it to the db. Work our hits by running a script on every page that'll save the count as one to the db, then do a sum from your db.

for unique visitors, get the IP address from the user and save it and select distinct from your db.

and for browsers, i believe php has a built in device that'll save information like that, although, I am not sure.

If you have access to them, and if the relevant data are recorded there, you could crawl through the server logs and get a breakdown by page/IP/useragent.

I don't know where you'd find browser usage statistics, but I know that Internet Explorer is the most-used, sadly. When will people learn?

PHPB's servers glitched; wouldn't acknowlege posts, and wouldn't list threads. Sorted out within half an hour, but apparently one of the admins had to be got down off a wall first.

The user-agent string supplied by the client can be recorded in in the access log. In Apache, adding "%{User-agent}i" to the logfile format would do this (then again, this specifier is already part of the Combined log format).

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm able to do the analysis for my own business' website using logs and an extractor script, but it would be useful to get a more general picture.

I think Google's zeitgeist is the best source, considering the phenominal amount of traffic they get.
