im switching over from MS access because it is proven to me its stupid worked good so far but o well!

my main problem was that auto number fields were not able to be compared in SELECT statements :S after about a hour playing with the code :o

so i was wondering incretment of a number in a table in SQL be easy?

is this called a procedure?

can someone give me an example? 😃 (you can resist the happy face lol)

To to an auto increment with MySQL using PHPMyADMin you just make the feild you want primary and INT feild or smallint, mediumint, int, bigint make it auto_increment

Not sure if thats the answer you want though.

alright i think that will help me later on! is i dont have PHPmyadmin installed wut does it do? does it allow you to edit databases in a window??

is there a MYSQL database editor software? if it doesnt do that?

phpMyAdmin is the right program . . .

to set a field which is set to auto_increment, just put a 0 as the value and it will auto pick the next row number.

If you want the query cause you don't have phpMyadmin yet,

Here you go

CREATE TABLE your_table_name(your_primary_key_field_name INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY, the rest of your table)"

Really what you need is all the stuff in CAPITAL after you_primary_key_filed_name. This will set a positive interger that can't be 0 or empty and it will increment automatically.

Just keep in mind that you can only have one PRIMARY KEY per table.

one of the problems i was having right now is that the auto number was not comparable it a WHERE statement in a query

example

$query = "SELECT Post_ids FROM Threads WHERE ID = $ThreadID";

it says missing operator but if i make it

$query = "SELECT Post_ids FROM Threads WHERE ID = '$ThreadID' ";

it says Too few parameters. Expected 1 error

how can i do this?

Hmm...

Your second version looks fine.

Try using this as your query and see what it says. It will echo back your query and let you know if your var has anything in it.

mysql_query($query,$link) or die("<b>Query Faild</b></br>\n".$query."<br>\n".mysql_errno().": ".mysql_error())

well at the moment everything is coded in ODBC for MS access i added mysql and myphpadmin to my server here at home and got that all set up! So now im going to convert all my BB code over to sql ill replay probally later tonight or tommorow.
