Preview images before final submission

I want to create a form where users submit their details including picture for their personal profile. Before the final submission and inserting details into database I want them to be able to preview their submissions.

I dont have problem with doing this with text data but have had problem displaying image while still in temporary directory on the server. This is the code I used and all I got was image placeholders and not the actual image.

Could somebody please tell me why this isn't working.

it won't work because the temporarily file is not an image file.

maybe you can do like <img src=generate_pic_from_temp_file.php>

where generate_pic_from_temp_file.php fopens and freads the file with an http-header that tells the browser it's a picture?

like:

header("Content-type: ".$_FILES['userfile']['type']);
$handle = fopen("/tmp/".$_FILES['file']['tmp_name'], "r");
$contents = fread($handle, filesize("/tmp/".$_FILES['file']['tmp_name']));
print $contents;

but i really don't know if that works at all.

I have been asking around PHPBuilder and the rest of the net for some time on the same subject with not even an attempt at a reply, but have sussed out a round about method of getting the required result.

Using PHP to do it is a bit longwinded and can increase your download time, especially if you are using nice simple blobs. So instead refer to good old fashioned javascript:

After your details form (A), create another form (😎 with the same inputs, but all hidden and valueless, and a javascript function that copies the inputted data from form A to form B on B submit (call the B submit button PREVIEW to save confusion).

Use the action for form B to create a new window with a preview of the details and a 'close this window' button. If they like it they can close the button and click SUBMIT on the original form, or change their details and try again.

I can't give you the script right now as I am in the middle of building it, but the general idea I have tested and works fine.

The reason this doesn't work is that php deletes all the files left over in your temporary folder after it's execution. So you can easily link to the temporary file while it's executing but once it's done that file is no longer there.
