Reading a variable and changing page accordingly

I have a static HTML page, with a link that you click to enter my website.
What I want to do is create a link that will change the URL that you're sent to when you enter my website.

The only way I can think of to do this is to have the enter page check for a variable, and then redirect to a different page accordingly.
However, I'm not sure how to do that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

can you be more specific on how/where/why you want to forward the user to a different page when they click enter? is it based on IP, or browser? will some users to go one page and others to another?

if you just want to do a redirect for ALL people, you dont need to use any variables, just rename your page to whatever.php and at the top put

<?php
header("Location: pageyouwant.php");
?>

and that will forward them.

Sorry, I'll try to be a little bit more clear.

Normally when someone enters my website, they have a link they click on to enter. That link redirects them to the main part of my website. What I need to do, is have an option so that when they click the link, they're redirected to a different website.

For example, say the website is www.website.com, and the page that they are redirected to when they click on the link to enter is enter.html. Normally, they would go to www.website.com, click on the link, and be sent to www.website.com/enter.html.
I need an option that can be turned on (maybe a variable?) so that instead of being redirected to enter.html, the people are redirected to a different website. www.website2.com, for example.

I don't want them to ALWAYS be redirected to www.website2.com, I only want them to be redirected when an option is set for that to happen.

This might work by having the initial page check for a variable, and decide what page to redirect them to based on what the variable is. I just don't know how to permanently change the variable, so that it stays changed until I change it back.

here's my suggesstion.
create a page called redirect.php
inside redirect put this:

    header("Location: http://www.website2.com");
} else {
    header("Location: http://www.website.com/enter.html");
}
?>

on website.com instead of having a link to enter.html send it to redirect.php. if the value $doRedirect is set to 1, they will go to website2, otherwise, they will end up at website.com/enter.html. you will have to manually edit the file and change the variable whenever you want the redirect to change, but that should do what you want.

That would work great if I had SSH access to the server when I need to change the variable, but unfortunately I don't.
A few other people may need to change it, and the only access they have is through the website.

I really need a way to change the variable through a link. Another PHP script that automatically opens and edits that one maybe? Is that even possible? Or somehow allowing another PHP script to permanently edit the variable?

the script below should modify that file. it is written specifically for that so if you make changes to redirect.php you may need to edit this.
when calling this script do
http://www.site.com/modify.php?1
or
http://www.site.com/modify.php?0

having 1 after the ? will set the redirect value to 1 so people will be forwarded and have 0 will set it to 0 so people will not be forwarded. give that a try and let me know if it works.

When I go to www.website.com/modify.php?1 it replaces the text of redirect.php with

Any ideas?

It does the same thing, except redirect.php contains this instead of whatever it was before.
