Just a passing poll wondering what the general consensus is on this

Probably best if this poll was in the echo lounge..

Anyway my thinking is more to both as that option isnt there i can not vote. Both are essential to a good web site.

You can have a speedy bad looking website, and users will leave, you can have a great looking website but no one will know because it takes years to load. Compromise on both and you come up with the best site around. I still am yet to see a site that both loads fast and looks good

Yeah ok fair enough. perhaps I should have put it alsewhere. I was just posting some stuff here and wondered what everyone who helps out in this board thought. by the way try NickSpace for a web site that looks good and is fast

get rid of the two JS errors that I get when it loads and itd look nicer 😉

hrmmm JS errors. thats interesting. what are they?? i have never had anyone mention that before..... Must be something to do with the menu system..

It depends on the site:

If you're running a heavy information site designed only to be searched, like dictionary.com then design is seondary to speed. I use that site cause I get what I want when I want not cause it looks nice. On the other hand if you're trying to sell something then make it look pretty. But whatever you do make it load fast.

The rollovers on the left throw errors: "class is a reserved identifier"
The offending line being "class = "A:hover"". Not sure why you need Javascript to do that; unless it's due to the fact that IE doesn't support :hover properly.... Um, I'm not sure you can change classes like that anyway.

It takes about eight to twelve seconds to get a response to a page request.

Oh, and the forward/next buttons haemorrhage "cur2.filters has no properties" on line 100.

I don't really care for your websites (not saying they are real bad, good but I don't think I'd get one, no offense or anything), especially with the ad on top. The ad kind of off sets the main design and distracts the user from the real purpose of the site. The hotel one (or whatever it is) isn't bad, just get rid of the ad or move it to the bottom of the page.

We can't allow this in any form. If someone is interested in getting exposure through the site, please contact the administrator via email at staff@phpbuilder.com . Footers may contain a pitch - it's a bit of a trade-off. The user is contributing to the community and in return they get exposure via their footer. Posting useless stuff and a huge ad in their footers is a complete NO.

So I see, but my ad isn't in my fotter... 😉 Plus I'm just joking around (although my business is legit), if the ad gets removed, doesn't hurt me any.

Well to be completely honest I didn't even think that it was advertising when I did it. it just seemed like a good example. As for my sites a realise the ones on there aren't the best examples. and there is a good explaination for the ad (The ass*ole who gt me to make it didn't pay me and wasn't nce to me at all) Mainly I just write my own pages simply to learn more about the code. like the trimeBBS page which has taught me endless amounts about php. It surprising how much code is required to do fairly simple things sometimes.. and how little to do complex things other times. Over all I just enjoy learning the stuff and being able t occasionally help people on this forum with their problems because we all know we like the help when its something we're stuck on. If its advertising take it out, no skin off my nose, and I respect your opinion on my pages. I do stuff I feel like doing and if I like it then I don't care what others think of it. especially because I know that most people wont respect the complexity of the code behind the pages.
well......after that big speil I think i made my point.

Why must so many polls be created as a substitute for these kinds of decisions, where the answer is either an obvious compromise, or a choice of personal taste?

csszengarden is awesome.

Sites should load speedy. They shouldn't have too many graphics. It's that simple. I'm used to viewing sites that look like crap and I don't care one bit about it.

Yeah the Garden is pretty cool. I am glad this post has spawned a healthy discussion. Although there seem to be some fairly different views out there. I guess like several have said before me its personal preference but speed is always a good thing.

Hey WeedPacket. JUst had a fiddle with my code. Can you check my page see if you still get those error's. you were right i didn't need JS at all. Now I have to figure out how to use php to get the drop boxes again :-) NickSpace

There's still the second error; filters are an IE-specific thingy so no-one else gets any visual feedback on those buttons.

Hrmm... Right so I've dragged out all my filter references and all my JS crap. There is nothing to that page but HTML or PHP now so SUrely the error's have gone
