How to confirm closing a window

Hi to all,

This must be a javascript issue, but , how could i make that when a user attempts to close the window, a dialog box appear with Ok and Cancel button so the closing can be stoped?

I have found some tips, but they make that the dialog apperars too when the user attempts to navigate outside the page.

I need to trap the situation when they attempt to close with the X button for example.

thanks for your tip about confirm, but, where should i put that code so i can stop the window closing?

If I attempt that onunload or onbeforeunload, I can stop closing, but these events happens too if you refresh the page for example, (and this page is refreshed every 60 seconds), so i obtain the dialog every 60 seconds too 🙁

I think the solution of Shrike is really good...

But use it like this and buy a book about JS

put this in the header:

and thsi somewhere in the body:

<a href="#" onclick="closeThis();">Close this window</a>

Sorry if sb is disturbed about a JS question here, but these forums are full of them an with responses.

So nick, if so disturbing is to you that novice users make this sort of "errors", that you need to use your time to remember to every one that make the same thing than me, ...

I dont need to buy a book about JS because there is enough resources on the internet for my needs.

This time I had this problem, searched a lot on google and not found anything that fits, that is why I asked, but anyway, perhaps I did not explain properly in the begining, what I would like to know was if it is possible to trap when the user clicks on the X button, not clicking in a CLOSEME link.

Anyway, thank you very much for your attention Olaf, your proposal is very nice and i will use it on other situations.

onUnload() might be what you are looking for, you can use it in this case in the HTML <body> tag.

To be frank though this is a PHP forum, and as you say there are alot of Javascript references and forums to search through.

I have tested before asking with OnUnload and OnbeforeUnload, but those events happens too when the page refresh itself every x seconds, which is my case, so the confirm dialog appears every x seconds too.

Anyway, I am taking a different way. it seems that pressing the X button can not be trapped (by the moment).

The last thing on my mid was o is to disturb in a forum with different subjects. This seems to be something common to every PHP, ASP, etc. forum, on all the javascript is everywhere. Must be some love-hate relationship between the languages ;-)

Sorry if i disturbed somebody, Next time I will attemp to be more cautious where i ask .

I've done some quick checking on this and I don't think it's possible. I found this explaining it, second to last post. This forum might be a good spot to post JavaScript questions though.

It can be done as Microsoft CM Server does it. It's quite possibly VB and not Javascript though.
