Thanks, yourself. "Sod" is better than some words you probably know. If the disk was no longer bootable, I'd say they got more than just /usr and /var.
You never answered my post, and what I say to ahundiak is, well, not necessarily aimed at you... though granted, I guess, it's your thread...whether or not you decide to give any information to your would be helpers is a decision you have to make.
It seems likely that your filesystem was ext2 ... I spent some time on the www looking for that info, in order to give assistance, but you never confirmed/denied that, so how could I tell you anything?
Assuming it was ext2, you could have mounted it on most any Linux box, and I think even FBSD5.x ...
