Global object acces - yes/no?

Many classes of my project need access to the PEAR:: DB-Object and my SmartyHandler-Object.

I'm searching for the best way to give them to other objects.

One possibility is to make a global object and use

global $DB;

to get access to it.

But i want my project to be as OOP as possible.

I'd be thankful for any suggestions!

My suggestion for you is that you try to experiment with superglobal variables...

No one can explane et better then the official php site so take a look:

That's just an other method of having the objects globally available.

But that can't be the best solution if you want to have it in OO-style. (Define all your objects as globals and then take what you need ...)

I mean - how do Java-Programmers solve that problem? I cannot imagine that they don't have more than one class in a project, which needs access to a database or an output layer.

One alternative to using globals is to pass $db around to all the functions that need it. It's a real pain.

I use globals for $db,$template and $config. But seldom for anyting else,
