Choosing a Domain name . . .

When you reigster a new domain name, is there any special criteria you follow when making your decision ?

I have my own criteria, and I'mjust wondering if other people have similar ideas.

Example; Always get a .com

I like .geek.nz

I mean from a selling standpoint.
Its alot easier for potential customers to remember .com's since they were the main thing for a while. Not alot of people (especially the not so net literate) would say well maybe it was a .net. or maybe .org, hell maybe .geek.nz . . .
correct, me if im wrong . . .

from a personal standpoint .geek.nz is pretty damn cool.

Oh, of course; if the client is after a .com or .co.nz domain then I'll see what I can do to find one. Naturally, though they might not get what they want. One company with a long three-word name wanted to use the abbreviation instead. I pointed out, however, that both www.msd.co.nz (their first choice) and www.msd.com were already taken.

Of course, since they were a commercial enterprise, rather than a network or nonprofit organisation, they needed a commercial domain name anyway.

Short as possible, relevant as practicable and make sure that the client approves before you grab the registration.

If $company.com is taken, sometimes we do $company$city.com, or perhaps better, $company-$biztype.com.

Also, initials Big Fat Company, Inc, can be BFCI.com. [edit]be sure to just check for "bigfat.com" also....[/edit]

Of course, the namespace there is pretty well-traveled. I've got a .biz or two also.
