irc search script

I hope this isn't off topic; however, I was wondering if an irc search engine can be coded with php.

If anyone has experience, tutorials or samples of this - please let me know.

The one's I've worked with utilize the ircg functions, but it can also be done with sockets.

I was aware that it has been done; however, I am looking to learn how to create my own.

Do you have any idea where I could start to learn this? I am now reading up on ircg; however, a sample or tutorial would be much better.

I always find looking at ones which have already been built is the quickest and easiest way of learning. Try to find a well commented one as that will make the task a lot easier.
