mysql query , dates

hei hei,
need some help with small registration system for guesthouse, what i'm writing:
php, mysql. i have simple mysql table like below where i keep dates between which guesthouse is reserved (also som eother data , but it's not omportant at the moment).

id | start_date | end_date

1 | 2003-11-24 | 2003-12-02

2 | 2003-12-12 | 2003-12-14

3 | 2003-12-27 | 2004-01-15

Ok, and now i need for example to know on which days on december 2003 (to make them different colour on small calendar which displays current month on guesthouses homepage, so vistors can see easily is it free or not).

So at the moment i would need result like that:
1,2,12,13,14,27,28,29,30,31

i have tried several solutions but, none worked good enough. it's not easy at all because as you notice reservation may also start in one month and end in next and so even with years and so on.

Maybe somebody has done something like that and can help me with this ?

It would be MUCH easier to store each day of the reservation instead of the range. Then you can do a simple queries of all the days for the month and load them into an array. When you display the graphic representation, you can do an array_search() to see if it is taken.
