relational db

I'm a total newbie, so I apologise in advance if I ask any stupid questions.

Can mySQL create relational databases? Or, do I need to create a relational database using a separate db program and then connect it to mysql server?

MySQL IS a relational database management system. As such, it creates, manages, and queries a relational database.

Other options are:
Microsoft SQL Server ( www.microsoft.com )
PostgreSQL ( www.postgresql.org )
Interbase ( www.borland.com/interbase/ )
FirebirdSQL ( firebird.sourceforge.net/ )
etc. etc. etc...

I prefer to use mysql since I've heard it's very fast, and also I prefer to use a command line interface (though there are GUIs for mysql).

For the record... SPEED is definitally NOT everything. MySQL ( at least v3.23 ) is lacking SEVERAL key features that other relational databases have.

Further, really, you'll probably never noitce the difference between MySQL and another database as far as speed, other databases are as fast if not faster...
