how to send email next week ??

Hello ppl,

I have on my site an greetings sistem, I made it myself :) , but now I want to improve it, there is one thing wright now that I realy wanna do it but I don't know how to start, I want to see what do you think  and how do you think this should be done, so ... let's start on the subject ;)

I saw on some big sites with e-cards that they have the option to send the email in a established date, and I see this option very usefull, But I don't know how to do it ... how to start sending emails from a date 🙁

I was thinking make a function wich is executed only one time in a day, when first visitor from a new day enter in my site this function should look in the database for ecards with send date the curent date... if cards found send all .. if not mark somewhere that the function has been finished and in this day should not check this again .

What do you think about my story ?? 😛 ... If somebody has a better ideea pls give me an reply ... or if somebody knows how this think is made on "big" sites give me some help , pls

you could just use time. like if you wanted to do a week, make it

$time = time();
$newtime = $time + 604800;

then do a query inserting into the db the seconds until the date (a week is 604800). lets say that field in the db is called sendtime. then do a mysql select query then an if statement. like:

if ($object[sendtime] > $time) {

mail("u can do this part..");
mysql_query("DELETE from yourtable card cuz its already sent...

}

i dont know if thats what your looking at but that is how i would do it

Indeed oprpg is on the right track... however, that script needs to run in order to do the SELECT... which is why you schedule cron to run it every day or something...

10x for your reply guys .. my problem is that I don't know how to start the script .. not how do the send mail or the rest of the php script.

I searched the forum and after that on google and I found a newbie page about cron job.

I found this :

17 20 * root echo "This command is run daily at 8:17 pm"
this line is executed every day at 20:17, ok , but can I make a php file be executed every day at this hour ???

If I make a script in a php file which will search in the database for ecards that need to be send in the curent day, what comand line I must write for the cron job to run my script daily at a specific hour ??

If error are find in my script this will make any bad for my visitors ???

I have a Cpanel for my site, from the hosting company, and there's a page about the cron program from where I can write a command to be executed at a specific hour, day ...
