SELECT CONCAT. WHERE as variables?

Hi, I want to set the WHERE in a query to a variable. How do I do this correctly?

$num = mysql_num_rows ($result);

I keep getting this error :

Warning: mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/hitoshi/public_html/viewthread.php on line 89

I've tried everything :S

my database DEFINATLY has the info.

Soo......according to this, you'd be looking up by thread_id, not thread....
