Accessing localhost on another PC that is set up for PHP, Apache and MYSQL.

I have successfully installed and can use PHP, Apache and Mysql for a project I am undertaking.

Please forgive my 'newbie' status as probably the answer to my problem is probably quite simple!

I have 2 PCs in close proximity to one another one of which will run Mysql, Apache, PHP etc. what I want to do is access the localhost of the one machine via a crossover cable on the network cards and thereby use the same database set-up for both machines. As yet I have been unable to get this configuration to work. Any suggestions greatlyfully received. Thanks in advance.

Localhost address is 127.0.0.1, which is non-routable. I dunno if you could deceive machine #2 by putting "192.168.0.1 localhost" into a hosts file, sounds like the kind of crazy hack I'd try though.

If I'm understanding your issue correctly, couldn't you just solve it by using a variable ---$dbhost<?>, I.E. set your scripts up to connect to a variable in some config file ("config.php" perhaps) and set this variable to "locahost" on machine one and "otherhost (whatever)" on machine two?

If you use DHCP then refer to the computer by it's network name, e.g. http://computername/, or by NAT e.g. http://192.168.0.1/ (for the 'network server' and http://192.168.0.2/ and so on). Apache should be listening on port 80 by default.

127.0.0.1 is a reserved for localhost, it's best to stick to the 192.168.0 range for small internal networks, that range is reserved for that purpose too afaik.

Many thanks to Shrike and other replies. I now have the 2nd machine accessing the mysql/apache/php on the 1st machine via 192.168.x.x. This response has pointed me in the right direction and is very musch appreciated.
