how do i get the top 3 highest points

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I need to pull out the top three points from mysql into a web query. I tried max() but that only gives me the max.

Some of my entries for points can have duplicate entry, so when i query the top three i will have more the 3 results. Anyone know any sql syntax that will help either in version 4.0 or 4.1??

Try adding a LIMIT 3 to your query

Select * from db Limit 3

I forgot you also have to order them

select * from db order desc/asc limit 3 (choose either one) i think it is.

Thanks for your help but there might be duplicate entry for points so 2 people could get the highest points and recieve gold medals

Well, thats up to you. You should design a sistem that provides some other kind of ranking parallel to your first one so that when there is a tie you can decide how gets what medal.

Try adding a date, and order by points AND date so that if two people have the same points whoever got the points first gets the best medal.

I think you should first figure out the lowest score of the top three and then use it to get the top scorers:

$query="SELECT DISTINCT points FROM table ORDER by points LIMIT 4";
$result=mysql_query($query);
$p=mysql_fetch_row($result);

$query="SELECT * FROM table WHERE points > ".$p[0];
$result=mysql_query($query);
while ($row=mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
