[Resolved] timestamp and strtotime()

Is there anyway to take a timestamp out of a database and format it using the strtotime(). I thought there was, but I can't seem to remember the syntax!

sure. use date(format, strtotime(timestamp));

Ok. See, now I thought that is what it was, but can anyone tell what I am doing wrong here.

20031217124134 is the number that is being pull from the
database. (Which is a timestamp).

12-17-2003 12:41:34 is what I want it to look like.

What I am using is date("m-d-Y h:i:s", strtotime($modified));

What I am ending up with 12-31-1969 05:59:59

I echoed out $modified and made sure that it did contain the number it was supposed to and it does.

Any hints on what I am doing wrong?

You'r going to need to cast your timestamp to a unix timestamp in the SQL

SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP(field) AS tstamp
FROM...

Thank you very much. I haven't ever had to use timestamp and I need some more help.

Ok here is the query I wrote:

$q = "SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP(modified) AS tstamp 
FROM file_tbl WHERE username = '$username'";

modified is my field that is a timestamp field.

How do I use that now as a variable.

Like before I was just trying to use

$modified = $row[modified];

What would I need to do?

There's no stupid questions. Beyond "Hey, can soemone write this for me?".

Anyway, you'll retrieve it the same way, only reference it through the alias you give it

$sql = "SELECT UNIX_TIMESTAMP(modified) AS tstamp 
          FROM file_tbl 
         WHERE username = '".$username."'";

$res = mysql_query($sql);
while($row=mysql_fetch_array($res)) {
   // format it...
   $stamp = date("m-d-Y h:i:s", $row['tstamp']);
}
