Running PHP on Desktop

Hi,

I'm probably being thick here but I need some help.

I have loaded PHP to run on Apache on my desktop. I followed all the installation instructions and the Apache server runs without errors.

However, how do I open a .php file in my browser ?

Does the file have to be in a specific folder ?

ps. a quickie? why would I get "Forbidden" message in my browser when I try to open http://127.0.0.1/

The forbidden message means apache is working as it should, however, in your conf file your restricting directory view (nothing wrong with that). You should access it like http://127.0.0.1/filename.php or http://localhost/filename.php

Your document root path is the place you need to store the files, this is usually

c:\program files\apache group\httpd\htdocs

But is dependant on your apache config file (again). You should be able to modify this from your start menu (Apache Group) but it's not for the faint of heart.

Do you know if there is a way I can specify multiple folders as well as the document root ?

In your conf file there is a spot that tells the server what page to load when you go to your site. for example

http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 is looking for a specifc file you need to tell it what one. the default is index.html and index.htm you can set this to anything you want, it does not have to be index or html. But you need to set it for filename.php or the best way i think is index.php and rename you home page to index. I stick with index because it is just simple that way.

multiple folders is only possible with virtual hosts - see the apache manual and look for "virtual host"
