Permissions

I have an image upload script here:

www.vanillageek.com/upload

I browse to a .gif file (that is all it will let you upload, if it worked 🙂
and I get this error:

Warning: copy(pics/goliveid.gif): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/willbear/public_html/upload/index.php on line 10
Could not copy

The pics folder is chmodded 776. Do I need to modify another folder? I really do not want to set the /upload folder to 776 in its entirety.
