Installing GD on PHP 4.3.4

I have looked and looked, but I haven't found a decent guide that will tell me how to install GD with PHP 4.3.4 , I tried a few ways, but each time it just didn't work and there was an error in the server, apache. I have just installed PHP 3 weeks ago, and didn't set the extension directive, that is also something I need help on. I now how to program PHP, but someone help me install GD! PLease

Which error message do u get, i.e. is there any hint on the reason of your problem? does your php start up? i do not really understand which concrete error u get...
