installed PHP/mysql on laptop, but can't browse localhost

This is reallly not a PHP issue, but does anybody know the anser on this?

I have installed PHP and mySQL on my laptop, and since I have W2K I used IIS as the internet server. There's a great article by Kevin Yank on SitePoint.com about this BTW.

So what's cool is I can be my own server when online by entering [url]http://localhost,[/url] BUT what's uncool is that IE thinks that localhost is a remote host -- whenver I try to surf my own site on my own computer, using php now, IE tells me I'm offline and says "Do you wanto to connect?" which defeats the whole purpose.

Any ideas on this, OR forum recommondations where they discuss this?

Is IIS binded to port 80?
Also try to
"telnet localhost 80"
Or when you do get that warning about you being offline, just click connect.

Yes it's on port 80, that's the default.

When itsays connect, I CNA'T connect becase I'm not on a network so what's the point. Basically, IE is not smart enigh to know that localhost means no need to connect.

localhost is a hostname, not an ip - so when IE tries to find localhost it has to use a DNS lookup to resolve the hostname to an ip address.

when offline, IE knows not to connect to a DNS - even if it is the local DNS, and so to find the ip you must be online

try connecting to http://127.0.0.1/

And if that works, you can edit yours HOSTS file so that it maps localhost to 127.0.0.1.
