best field type to use for checking the login date

is it timestamp or just date?

if in case a person logon to my website and i used timestamp on my field name for my database and stored the date logon how will i know if the person logon today or yesterday or 2 days ago from now?

I do not know, if I understood your question right, but Timestamp is not the time, it gives you the exact time (and date) between 1901 and 2038.

Anyway I personally prefer to store this information in a datetime field and convert it to a timestamp if I need one, because this way the information in your database is easy readable and can be handled better by databases that do not support timestamps. But of course the timestamp has some advantages, too.

Basically it comes down to what information you want to know.

If you want to know the “date and time” then you use the column type DATETIME if you simple want to know the date then just use DATE.

I would suggest DATETIME though then you can tell what time of day the user what around.
