Retrieving rows of result set for editing

I want to create a system whereby users can edit certain rows of data from a database table. I want to be able to bring up a form with the data retrieved in text fields for editing. This seems quite easy to do when there is a primary key in the table.

I was wondering what the most efficient way of doing this if there is no primary key in the table. i.e. getting a reference to that row without a primary key field in place.

To update a single record you must have field, or combination of fields, by which you can uniquely identify the record to be updated. If not, you update several records.

Identify the record to be updated by specifying the unique field values in the WHERE clause

eg.

UPDATE tablename SET fieldname = aValue WHERE field1 = x and field2 = y

You can do it without a unique idenfier, but you run the risk of updating the wrong record, or all of the matching records. For a table like this, you should always have a primary key
