HTML emails and Variables

I am making an automated activation email for my membership system.

The mail works fine, it sends and is great, however.... I cannot get this part to work.

$url = "http://www.tycooneden.com/rct_hunter/activate.php?activate_id=";
$url .= $activation;
$message = '

<p>Thankyou for signing up at Tycooneden.com to play RCT HUNTER<br>

The $url bit JUST prints "$url". I have tried putting the whole link there (http://www.tycooneden.com/rct_hunter/activate.php?activate_id=$activation) But that too doesn't print the VALUE of $activation, it JUST prints "$activation"

I know it's a trivial thing, but it is VITAL that I get it working

Note:Unlike the two other syntaxes, variables and escape sequences for special characters will not be expanded when they occur in single quoted strings.
