Remove / from file

Hi,

I have the variable $file that returns /someimage.gif. What I need to do is remove the '/' so that I can echo the image. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It works both ways, but I prefer str_replace. Now, is there anyway to replace just the first occurance? Like I have multiple directories (ie /dir1/dir2/dir3/img.ext) and I don't want all '/' replaced, just the first one.

PCRE will be less prone to error:

$new_filename = preg_replace("/^\\//", "", $filename);
echo $new_filename;
?>
