condensing a string

If a user enters a string through a form, is there a way to condense the string down and get rid of excess white space. I am not talking about trim. For example:

my name is jason

i have no life, live with

my parents

I would like to automatically condense that to:

my name is jason
i have no life, live with
my parents

Why not just [man]str_replace[/man] \n\n with \n?

Will that work to condense horizontaly and vertically if that makes sense to you. Like condesnse sentences and paragraphs?

That will get rid of extra line breaks. You could then do a regex to get rid of extra space, though it should be ignored through HTML.

Could you please show me how to make a regrex to remove extra spaces? I've never been able to figure out regular expressions. Also, the reason it is importan is because of the way im parsing the string, not because of how it is displayed in html. Thanx!

For [man]preg_replace[/man] the regexp is /\s+/ - one or more whitespace characters.

Just think: once you do figure out regular expressions you'll have a whole new range of solutions.
