How would one show code (php) in a textarea?

Leave out <?php?> tags
or
echo it
or
[man]highlight_file[/man]

There's more ways. That's just off the top of my head

Highlight file puts

<code><font color=#000000> at the beginning of everything and </code></font> at the ends. And it adds extra line breaks.

I don't want to leave out the <?php part because this thing is being used to edit the files on my site. Same with the echoing it thing.

There has to be another way...I'm reading in from a file

Echo won't work...Doesnt show variable names
Highlight File also shows all the <font color="#color">
and I dont want to leave out the <?php because im using this thing as an editor for my site
