[Resolved] text area and hyperlinking

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to make tha contents of a text area hyperlinked so clicking one line will repopulate the text area with fresh contents based on link?

eg

Display all directories in the drive in the text area. clicking on a directory name should repopulate textbox with the clicked directory contents

Not from a text area. But a list area would do it. You can use the on change event and do something like what you're thinking.

I suppose this is what he had in mind:

Based on your dir reading yoru fill the option values. When the page reloads you use the inputvalue to determine which dir to read next.

hi,
thanks alot for the help.
i have got a list area with hyperlinks to all the directories
unfortunately, clicking on the links justs refreshes the page instead of displaying the directory contents
also, i am using php dir functions so my select is within a while loop , is there a way to assign values to each option.

why not use an <iframe> provided by html. and load the normal html page in that frame, that does what you want 🙂

Here goes..

You do not need the hyperlinks: The onchange() function will reload the page for you.

Since your select box is named "directory" that is the value you have to get in your script: $directory = $_POST[directory]. THis is only one directory, so you'd probably have to include the fullpath somewhere too.

In total that would be --untested!-:

hi,
i am not getting the valuse from a form
this is for a filemanager so it should automatically load the dirs inthe system
i tried specifying the path thro' a variable but its not working

what i meant is that the path is given as $DIRPATH ="/"
and then i am calling a function filemanager acceprting this as an argument that then creates the page
using this code, the list area is displayed as empty
where could i haver gone wrong?

Hi Aparna,

The <select..> is part of a form! So you need to submit the form, and grab the input data. What you do, is you have the form post to the page it is on. THen in the header you get the directory path.:
$dirpath = $_POST['dirpath'];

But, in case it is a first load (You do not know which path to view!) you would have to check wether it exists:

$dirpath = $_POST['dirpath'];  // Get posted path
if($dirpath = "")   // If the variable is empty/not set
 {
  $dirpath = "//";   // Set to the default path
 }

I am not sure wether you know yourself what you want to do.. You asked for browsing through a textbox. It starts too look ther eis no reason to do this.. you could just use plain links on the page??

this is part of my project, and well i am designing this page based on what i was asked to do
ie the system directory contents r 2 be displayed in a textarea.when the user clicks on a particular directory the textarea is to repopulate with the contents of the directory.I was unable to create hyperlinks within a textarea and so i switched to list area as suggested in this forum.

thats the problem this script should work on any system
its for a filemanager that should be implemented on any system its run on 🙁

You do realize that it can ONLY run on a server? And that it will ONLY display folders / files on the server?

If you need it to start somewhere, use
$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']
as a start directory. That is always available. But.. I wonder wether you always want that to be read?
I'd put a serious questionmark on what you are doing (Security wise..)

see this is one module of a larger project.

essentially when run from apache or wherever , it should display the system directories eg var,usr,home,mnt etc . the user should be able to add/del/edit/vies file and directories using this page

right now, clicking on files is appending it as it is run

ie
for eg
i click var then www then html and the go back to intial page and click usr
instead of getting
/usr
i get
/var/www/html/usr
and the list area is dynamic ie its resizing

i have been trying to get this straight for more than 2 weeks now
and am really at the end of my tether. i just can seem to find out what going wrong where

Hi,

Most pages have some sort of a config file. I have actually written a long config for a 30-page, 30000 line projectI am working on. One of the inputs there is a list of paths:

$pathfromroot 	        = 	"secure/local/";              

$includepath	        = 	$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$pathfromroot;
$databasesettings       = 	$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']."includes/hyperspectralconnect.php";  

$importpath             =       $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$pathfromroot."spectradatabase/importfolder/";
$exportpath             =       $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$pathfromroot."spectradatabase/exportfolder/";

So if you want portabillity, you can still have to modify a few settings first. Every server is different..
