help: how to make search form and result load on same page ?

Hello
I would like to place my search form on the same page as my result page -- is this possible?

By default all my records are displayed without any filtering on my index page but I would like to add a search form with a drop down menu (ex: countries) that would reload the same index page but filtering all the records according to the criteria selected (in this case a country)

Any help would be really welcome as I'm still a newbie

I think I understand what you mean. You want to have a list of something, and then a filter form beneath. When they choose the filter, it reloads the page with the filtered results, and still the filter option. Here's an example of how you could do that:

$query = "select * from tablename";
if(!empty($filter)) $query .= " where country='$filter'";
$result = mysql_query($query);
while($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result)) {
// Display list of stuff here
}
echo "<br><br>
<form action=thispage.php method=post>
<select name=filter>
<option value=USA>USA

<option value=Spain>Spain

<input type=submit value=Filter>

That should do it.

I didn't manage to make my page work correctly -- as I'm a "dreamweaver wysiwyg guy" I also tried another technique to sounded easier for a complete PHP newbie like me 😉

I added my seachform (called "search" and opening the same page) but I must have done a mistake when handcoding 😕

nothing happens when I submit my search form -- Is it because I have different tables (recordsets) involved in my search form? What should I put between the brackets of the PHP statement above ??

Here goes:

You need to check wether somebody as searched. Easiest in this case is to check for the actual searchterm. We assume that safety features are in place, so we cannot use $country directly, but need to grab it first:'

in this example I assumed that you have a table with a colum country, which holds country identifier numbers.
