Trouble Installing MySQL

I have RedHat 9.0, and I'm using the Apache and PHP that came with Linux. PHP version is 4.2.2-17.2. I installed MySQL, but PHP is giving the following message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /mnt/shared/game/php.php on line 30

I don't know what configuration files or whatever I have to edit to get PHP to realize that MySQL is there. I have installed the following packages, I don't know which I have needed:

php-mysql-4.2.2-17.2
MySQL-client-4.0.17-0
MySQL-server-4.0.17-0
MySQL-shared-3.23.51-1

Any help would be greatly appreciated, being I'm considering just uninstalling everything and starting from stratch. Thanks!

check phpinfo() to see if mysql support is built in there. Also, MySQL comes in the redhat install as well. You could have installed rom there. Though, the best advice I could possibly give you is to not use the redhat supplied RPM's and instead install everything yourself. Not only does it give you the experience of doing this, but it gives you complete control over your configuration options. Not to mention, upgrading is a helluva lot easier

I took your advice and did a completely new install. It wasn't that bad, I followed this tutorial: http://tanksoftware.com/tutes/installingphp.html. Everything went really well, and now MySQL works. Now, I have another problem. Here's the error I get now when I run it:

I checked the permissions on the /tmp folder, and they're 777.

I was about to post this when I got an idea. I set the session file that it was trying to access to 777 as well, and then it worked. That might be a temporary fix, but we'll see. For now, it works. Thanks for your help!
