Another mail() Problem

Hello,

I am using mail() function to send emails to clients. The problem i have last night was over my head.

I used the same old script that i used for the last month to send emails to the clients and it is working fine with no problem. And last night i run my script successfully and it echo me that emails have me send to following addresses.

And suddenly i found that half of the emails are bounced back. there was total of 201 addresses that i pick from a text while and send email and 123 emails are bounced back with the msg counldnt resolves that host name. The email address are of differnet domains some of yahoo some local isb email addresses.

Its strange. I would like to modify my script and make it more powerfully. I want to know that is there any way to check if the email() function is shoot it send request to pop server and wether the server send the email successfully or not.

Please quide.

That's just the way email works. You send out mail, it gets passed along multiple servers, any one of which can declare a problem and bounce it back. The mail() function can only send the mail onto the first leg of it's journey; after that it's out of your (and PHP's) hands.

If you're getting a whole bunch of errors about not being able to resolve host name, it is possible that there is/was a problem with your internet service provider's DNS server that would interfere with mail delivery. It's also possible that you just have a bunch of incorrect email addresses. In any event there is no way to code around it.

There are other methods, but none of them will make any difference if swr is right about what happened.

In any event there is no way to code around it.

Well it might be the Dns problem but i am dam sure that the email addresses was right.

I was asking about a method that will tell that the mail() function is successfully executed and the request has been send to pop servers of my hosting company.

the mail() already tells whether it has given the email to the email server / sendmail as mentioned in php.ini without a problem.

Whether sendmail of course succeeded is another matter. And if you do find out there's still the question of whether your ISP was successful - mail() won't be able to tell you if their mail server had fallen over, or another router further down the line.
