[Resolved] Quick question on the different forms of quotes

OK. I know that when coding php/mysql the single quote, ' , will tell the parser not to parse anything contained in that string, whereas the double quote, " , is a signal for parsing. However, what about the quote underneath the tilda? The, ` . Does that have any specific function? Thanks🙂

many people use the tilde when referencing fieldnames in SQL strings, for example

$query = "update tablename set fieldname = '$variable';";

Just to extend stolzyboy's answer, if you want to use column/table identifiers in MySQL containing special characters or are reserved words, then you have to use the backtick, otherwise they're optional.
