all the variable are declared about 15 lines up:

$gold_taken = floor($player_stats['level'] * 135);
$disp_loc = "Lotira Inn -- Rent a Room";
$num = mt_rand(1,15);
$seller_name = "Lary";
$return_link = "<a href='/castlebrook.php?RL=lotirabarmenu'>Return to the Bar</a>";

database interaction has nothing to do with this output.

There is nothing wrong with the code you posted, which means the problem originates somewhere in the code you haven't posted.
