Unique code generation

Does anyone know how to generate UNIQUE Identification codes?

basically, I want to add user details to a database and I don'r really want to rely on ID codes such as 1,2,3 etc... but would prefer unique codes such as qx34hg.

I've generated codes using rand(), srand() etc... but I feel that this isn't really good enough for this purpose.

any help on this matter will be appreciated!

combination [man]mt_rand[/man], and [man]md5[/man] should do it for you

You can also try the uniqid function if you want to be sure it's unique.
