Simple Select code needed

Please help im new to PHP. I need to extract some information from my sql database and print it on a web page. The code I am using is shown below. Can someone please point out where I am going wrong, and correct my code. Thanks

$result=mysql_query("SELECT id FROM $imagetable WHERE id = '$id'") or die(mysql_error());
while $row=mysql_fetch_array($result)
  {
  echo $row[id];
  } 
?>

Assuming the variables for connection have a value..

Thanks for the quick reply, The variables for connection is correct. I have added this code to my site and I get the error

Parse error: parse error, expecting `'(''

on this line
while $row=mysql_fetch_array($result)

Have I done something wrong?? Thanks again
