How do i keep line breaks in a text field when insterted into a databse?

I have a text field in a form and would like to be able to keep the line breaks when they are inserted into the database. For example, somebody types in the text field and they type 2 paragraphs and in between the 2 paragraphs is a full line break with no text. How do I keep that so when that is called from the database it keeps those breaks? I've been told I need to use "nl2br"...but how do i make the text field that somebody is typeing in, automatically insert "\n" whenever they make a line break?

HTML does this automatically, the line breaks are already inserted for you. More than likely, what you need to do is display the line breaks as <br /> when you output the text again.

Thats what nl2br() is for, converting newlines stored in the database ( or anywhere else ) to HTML line breaks ( <br /> )
