Users On Tutorials?

Im trying to find a tutorial that can help show certain people are online. Its for a Gaming Website, and i want to have a place on the site that displays the members that are currently viewing the site. If not that, a Way to show the forum members viewing the site. dose anyone know of any tutorials that may helped, I tried searching yahoo and google, but Im not sure what i should be typing in.

Try searching this forum for "users online". The usual method to this is to use sessions to track your users.

Yea, i seen lots of those, but i want to be able to identify certain users. say if i was online, on the side it would list my name. I have the tutorials and lots of scripts for how many users are online, but none go farther, i check around here some more. maybe i missed something.

prob same as any other sql-related one...make it update they're last page load every page, then run a 10 min cron which deletes any users from the 'online' database if last page > 10 mins

I just posted this too. This is a good tutorial on how to control sessions with your database. Using this method makes the cronjob un-needed.

you can also do it this way

1. use sessions on each page

2. use [man]session_cache_expire[/man] so that a session dies when the browser window is shut

3. when a user logs in, log his / her session_id in the database alongside username

4. open a handle to the session directory (with [man]dir[/man]) where session data is stored

5. in this dir, there's one file for each session. The file name, conveniently, is the session id

6. read in the file names, look in database to get the username of that session
