sending emaill to localhost...make sense??

i am now doing my project on the localhost.
is it possible to test sending email on the localhost?
can i just simply 'mail' to my microsoft outlook??
if can, but what is the address of that?
because i wish to test sending the temporary password to the user after their registration.

in addition, how to let the users know how many new unread messages he has in his 'mailbox'?? such as we see in the mail box.

I'm using a small program, a mail server, Ability Web Server , you can simply configure an email adress like this test@127.0.0.1 and after that you must setup a new account in outlook with the mail server on localhost or 127.0.0.1 .

I installed a mail server and pointed it at 127.0.0.1, created some mail domain with whatever addresses I wanted, then mapped a domain to localhost in the hosts file

e.g. my.little.domain 127.0.0.1

Then mails are sent via the mail server running on localhost. You can then set up Outlook to get the mails from the mail server. Can only do SMTP though, not POP3 🙂

I'd suggest you get an email server if you haven't already.
There are several free out here, both for windows and unix systems.

Once that it done, you need to get a domain name and create MX records pointing to your IP, if you have a dynamic IP, you can use serverices such as www.dyndns.org to create a domain name.

That is, if you'd like to have a mail server from which you can send & recieve emails.

So i tried to install the mail server (ArgoSoft), then it asked for the network ID (guess is IP address?)
and it asked for the DNS

So then i tried to install and config the DSN, then it asked for IP address,
so then again, i install and config the TCP/IP.
I type the address myself:
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Submask: 255.255.0
Default gateway : 192.168.1.1
DNS server address: 192.168.1.2

then and then the primary problem i faced here:

i tired to view my id address with 'ipconfig' in prompt, but the msg show like this:
c:>ipconfig
Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media state....: Cable disconnected

then i tried:

c:>ipconfig/renew
it shows:

Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Error: No adapter bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP

what is wrong???!!!
i've never 'touch' all these things so i totally in blur!
so, what should i do ??

besides that ,is it possible just using IMAP and SMTP to send and receive mails??
i've tried to send mail with SMTP, but also failed.
the msg showed:
Warning: Failed to Connect in c:..path..\mailform.php on line 8

but i totally typed the src from the book, and while i view the phpinfo(),

Well, ok...now we've moved on beyond PHP and come to networking issues.

First of all, do you have broadband or are you on a dial-up connection?

Secondly, unless you're actually running your own DNS server, use your ISP's DNS in the mail server.

If I understood you right, you want to send mails from your computer to your computer, not outside?

If you answer that, I can give you additional help setting it up.

i m using dialup, with modem.
i m trying to , just sending mail and receiveing mail in my own pc, with different accounts in the outlook express..
or should i have network card to do all of this??

the main prob here is i cant even access my ip address

Hi, I assume that you don't have this system connected to a local LAN and are only using dial-up. This explains why you are getting this response from ipconfig. ipconfig without any options assumes you want information about an ethernet connection which you don't have. If you run the command with an /a option (e.g. ipconfig /a), it will give you info about all the interfaces. Bear in mind however that you'll likely get a similar response if you are don't have any active network connections.

It seems that you're only recourse is to use the local loopback address (127.0.0.1) which should always be active. You can tell this by running 'ping 127.0.0.1' from the command line. You should get four replies.

I know this doesn't tell you how to get your email server running, but hopefully you better understand the network part of the issue. BTW, if there was anyway that you could install Linux, it is fairly easy to configure a email server in addition to Apache which you can run PHP with. Hope this helps a little.

As stated above, since you're not using your NIC and don't have an IP address assigned to it, configure the mail server to work on IP 127.0.0.1 (which is you NIC's "internal" IP).
In order to send mail from scripts, you'll have to have a properly configured SMTP server, either ArgoSoft's, or Windows - it doesn't really matter. (but ArgoSoft's uses an ActiveX component, atleast when using ASP scripting)

In ArgoSoft mail server, create a domain named "localhost" and create the appropriate accounts under that domain.

From the scripts, you send the mails to something@localhost, ArgoSoft should then recieve the mails, and place it in the inbox of that account.

To recieve the mails using outlook or any other email client, configure it to recieve mails from localhost or 127.0.0.1, using the username/password you assigned your account in ArgoSoft.
As for the DNS server in ArgoSoft, I'm unsure if it's needed when not sending mails over the internet...if it won't run without a DNS server, set the DNS server to 127.0.0.1, that should work.

I hope that helps some, if not - please describe the problems you get and we'll see if we can work it out.

ok, i'll try while i m on my pc , anyway, thanks again for regard!!
so, i tried to 'ipconfig' in the windows 98 (i've got 2 platforms)
it show the ip addres , mask , and so on.
but it shows two sthernet adapter:

0 Ethernet adapter
ip address 0.0.0.0
subnet mask 0.0.0.0
default gateway

1 ethernet adapter
ip address 169.254.228.236
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
default gateway

then i tried to install ability web server (oh oh, i choose another server)
while i try to run the server, then the msg pop out:

""cannot start the web server (Listening problem)
The web port is already used by another application
Use the console to configure a correct web port""

i think that prob in win2000 advance server is that my nvidia network adapter doesnt work well (just my opinion) but while i tried to view its properties it show that the driver working well. then i dun really know what's the prob is..

so if i couldnt solve prob maybe i would change another platform (is it okey??)

then for the server i installed in win98, how do i config a correct web port??

In Windows NT (NT/2000/XP), the NIC isn't "active" as long as no cable is connected, or the NIC is connected to another NIC/switch etc.

Well, regarding your web server, was it on Win 98?
If you have the "Personal Web Server" installed, it's possible that it is using Port 80, therefor blocking your other web server function on that port.
Either uninstall PWS or configure the other web server to use a different port.

ermm..sorry another 'little' problem again..
how to set my outlook express to receive the mails from my mail server?(argosoft mail server)
there are some configuration i made, please take a look where i should change or add some more details..
Mail account : ArgoSoft Mail Server
Incoming mail (POP3) : localhost
Outgoing mail (SMTP) : localhost
Incoming mail server
Account name : webmaster (where i'd created in the mail server)
Password : webmaster (same as above)

the problem i faced now is, such like i enter the wrong password while i start the outlook express and it keep on asking me to enter the password. but i m sure it is not wrong coz i just set it to remember my password.

ArgoSoft uses the complete account name for verification, which means your settings should be something like this:

Incoming mail (POP3) : localhost
Outgoing mail (SMTP) : localhost
Incoming mail server
Account name : webmaster@localhost (the domain you created in ArgoSoft)
Password : webmaster
