passing variables through url

dear all.

can anyone tell me how to get php to read the variables passed to it thru the url (e.g. http://www.phpbuilder.com/board/newthread.php?s=&action=newthread&forumid=3 has variables s, action and forumid )

i know $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'] get it as a string, but is there an easy way to make it so that I can type something easy then go like echo $action; an stuff..

what? what am i supposed to look at? how does get work? do i just type $_GET and then all of a sudden $action is whatever i passed through the url?

i can figure out what it does, but i have no idea whatsoever on how to use it?

$GET is an array of the variab;es in the url. If you wanted to use the action variable, you'd reference it as $GET['action']

I believe you can use something like this, if it answers your question:

the URL: mydoc.php?action=something

to retrieve it:

$_GET['action']

or to print it:

echo $_GET['action']

Just make sure you don't have a form with the same name, that would mess things up.

I'm a complete newbie to PhP, so I can't be 100% certain what's stated above it in any way correct :rolleyes:
