Can you update a mysql database by uploading .xls file?

Hello, I recently got approached with this question. Can a person create a database with a ton of information and then say like every 2 days that they have to update change and perhaps add information . So they make all the changes in the excel file and want the mysql database and php to read it in making changes where its different and adding in new information if present. So is this possible using php and mysql? Please help thank you

No, I don't think so. Excel is a proprietary format, and is heavily formatted with $ms-o-code.
But you can export to a comma-separated file from excel, then upload the text-file, and parse it with php before insert.

Never looked inside an excel-file, so I might be wrong.
