.htaccess file question

Hello ppl,

my hosting company has set the default seting for chache as none, so all my files are not chached on the client's browser .. this cause alot of traffic :( . Now I have this solution, I will include a .htaccess file in my site directory with this content 

mod_gzip_on No

and everyting is ok , instead 5G/month now it's 3G but I'm wondering if the files from subdirectories of my site are chached, I'm thinking of my images subdirectory and directories which contains large files, like panoramic images (click the link from my signature) . As I see the files are cached but I want to be 100% sure of this.

Am sa-ti raspund in romana ... sper ca nu te deranjeaza.

.htaccess afecteaza toate fisierele si directoarele(recursiv) continute in directorul respectiv.

ca sa te convingi de chestia asta poti incerca sa pui un "limit POST" si sa incerci sa accesezi imaginile.

sorry for that, i did't knew how to put that in english but I'll give it a shot:

.htaccess not only affects the curent directory, but the curent tree of directories(the curent directory beeing the root). a nice way to test that is to put a "limit POST" on your .htaccess and try to access directly the images from your site(images directory or whatever) ...

I tried on a test directory test img or test image file and I receive this error :

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email][e-mail][/email] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. 

How can I stop somebody by accesing a directory, but not this way, with an error message.

If I will make an password protected folder using htaccess file, this wil sure stop them to see the pictures , but it will stop my files from the server from accesing the pictures from that directory too ????

this is a bit more complicated ....

you could use a php script to serve the images from your server and access the images something linke this :
<img src="images.php?parametru=...."> and put all the images in a directory that is not accesible from the web. In your php script you could check (using sessions for instance) if the request is made from one of your pages or directly.

another way to do it is by using .htaccess

turning off mod_gzip is likely to cause more transfer, as what is being transferred is no longer being compressed and so takes up more space.

i'd suggest setting [man]session_cache_limiter[/man]. you can set this in .htaccess, http.conf, php.ini or using [man]ini_set[/man]

this setting controls what caching headers are sent from the browser to the client - i'd guess you want to give it the value public, so that data is cached both at proxies and browsers

I know that what I said sounds weird, about including the mod_gzip off in htaccesss, but please belive that after I inserted that htaccess file the trafic of my sites was less than in previovous month, and I had aprox. the same number of visitors/month.

I will read about what you told me and maibe is a good ideea and tell me what exactly I should write in my .htaccess file because if I will use session_cache_limiter I will use it this way, with htaccess.
