alert + unread msg??

how can i do like emial, the server will show how many msg that i havent read yet??
like :
Inbox (1)

then, is it easy to make 'alert msg' to the user ? like in icq, telling ur friend 's birthday..

what is idea of this alert msg if there is "Inbox (1) " ... then he will know that he has one unread message. or are you taking about mail notificator like in Outlook, if so then you have to make component that has nothing to do with php

sorry sorry but i m still in uncharted water!!
what i m trying to do is:
the user do know how many unread msg for him.
actually what i want to do is:

for the administrator, he has lots and lots of the applications from the users.
then i wish to let him know:
how many unread applications that need his concern..??

for the coding written by leatherback,
select count(*) as number_unread from email where unread ='1' and user='user'

so i guess 'unread' is the column to verify the msg that still havent been read, but, how to verify those which are read b4??
how to distingush between 'read' and 'unread'???
then, what's the function of 'user'??

Thatt was a general query to do that, since you only had a very general statement. In your case, you are appearently the only person using this list, and you do not care who sent the application. So you do not need the user=$user part. That is in case of a database with lots of email, where each user has it's own subset.

The unread colum is a 0 / 1 colum where you have a default of 1. When you open the file you set this to 0. So if you want the number read you

select count(*) as number_unread from email where unread ='0'
