splitting string to single characters

how would i go about splitting a string such as "123456" into a array>? explode does not work. I have been looking for a good 30 mins on the net ( yahoo php.net you name it ) and i was wondering anyone knows of a function>?

if not i was thinking maybe i need to count chars or someting then do a while loop to stick in them in a array using a chr get function or something.

any comments leads or pokes at my intellengce are welcomed 😉

individual string chars can be accesses like an array with {} instead of []

$string = "1234";
# $string{0} == '1'
# $string{1} == '2'
# $string{2} == '3'
# $string{3} == '4'
echo $string{0}.$string{1}.$string{2}.$string{3};

that may help if you aren't passing the string to something that requires an actualy array type
