thumbnails without GD?

Is it possible to automatically create thumbnails of images(reduced file size as well) without having the GD's installed? If I could get confirmation on this, I can stop searching.

My host does not have the GD's compiled into PHP. It must be compiled right?...I can't just slap the files in a folder and call it done?

I just noticed that weekender suggested http://www.imagemagick.org/ in another thread. I'm going to give it a go.

Other suggestions are still welcome.

eeek...It must be compiled which isn't supported by my host.
