Output names begining with A

I have made a page which outputs names from the database, but how would i stop it from returning all the names, to lets say just names begining with A... For example:

I have:
Adam
Emma
Amy
Craig

and i want it to only output Adam and Amy.

How can i make it so that it desplays everything else but letters.
It would be displaying numbers (1232) and symbols (*/#)

How could i do that?

Not sure what you mean. But i am fairly sure you are looking at using a regular expression to remove all letters. Something like
$outstring = eregi_replace( "[a-z]", "", $instring);
Not sure wether this works (I am a complete loser in reg. expressions) but it is the general idea,. I suppose.

No, not that, it is exactly the same as before (Outputting data) but instead of outputting letters i wanna do it for all symbols and numbers like here is my database again:

Ok, so i want it so that it will only output the ones with the numbers and symbols infront of them.
