List Group Names

Well im working on a script and what i want to do is list all the diffrent types of fanlisting under the coumn fanlisting

so for example i have

ID Name Email Fanlisting
01 Bob [e-mail] Grapes
02 Brian [e-mail] Pies
03 Brian [e-mail] Carrots
04 Alex [e-mail] Carrots

and i want to lsit them like this so the script generates the title, the title being fanlisting and then list all the members with that title

so it would do

Grapes

Bob

Pies

Brian

Carrots

Brian
Alex

and if more users were added for diffrent fanlistings it would go on to add a new title and then list the members so basically i want to list all the possbile group names that appear under the fanlisting column and them echo the members udner each of the echoed group names

Hi,

You can use 'group by' in your query:

"select * from fans group by fanlisting"

Then, when outputting, you could check wether you are still in the same fanlisting, and while outputting:

if(! $fanlistold == $row[fanlist])
{
$fanlistold = $row[fanlist]
echo "<b>".$row[fanlist]."<b>";
}

right so yeah i know the group by query so it echos it in alphbetical order and groups the fanlistings together but what i want to do is echo each group before it list them and i dont really understand what u mean in ur 2nd part of ur post.

My second part is actually the display of the listing name.

What it does: It checks wether the value of a stored variable is the same as the current listing name. If that is not the case, you know you have a new listing: It outputs that name. And, for the next round, the stored variable get's changed in the current listing name.

If they are the same, nothing is outputted.
