I'm not sure how to ask this..

I want to be able to run my site out of one central "index.php" file, that relies on other php files..

For example, on IPB message boards, you always see index.php at the top, followed by an argument. Like, when you click on one of the forums, it will say "http://www.abcde.com/board/index.php?showforum=2". I guess what I'm asking is, what allows you to use arguments in a PHP file like that? Sorry if this is unclear..

Basically what you see is:
index.php -> The page
? -> Seperator, telling that there is some information later on
blaaat=1 -> Tells the page that there is a variable called blaaat, which holds the value 1.

THen you can use PhP to get the variable, and load pages based on this variable.

That is not really a PHP question. It is HTML. When data is passed from one page to the next it can be done four ways (That I know of).

Store it in a database and then retrieve it again
Pass it through SESSION variables
Through POST variables as with sending a form with a method="post"
(This sends that data seperate from the url)
Through GET variables as with a form method="get"
(This appends data to the url as:

http://www.domain.com/page.php?variableKey=value

The example you give is the last one. You can hard code it in a link, or have a for use a GET method etc.

You would need to do a test such as:

if ($_GET['showforum'] == 2)
{
// code to do here
}

You could use any version of If / else or switch() etc. with conditional code.

You could also store info in cookies.

Or you could email it to an bad address and then pick the bounce out of /var/spool :p 😉
