File handling

I'm having trouble using the rename(), unlink() locally (win98) and on the server (unix).

Locally, rename just doesn't do anything. Is there a 'special' way to use for windows?

Are the files in the same directory? Are you passing full paths to the files? Let's see some code...

Here's an example: I tried this locally on my win98 (with apache) and absolutely nothing happened ... no changes, no warnings, no errors.

        if($file != "." && $file != ".."){
            $new_file = explode("_", $file);
            $new_file[2] = "collcutt";

(FYI: A colleague mis-spelled the names about 100 images (they all have the same stem and I've extracted the bit that need changing by exploding $file).

I also have some issues dealing with the permissions of files, etc, on our remote server, as I'm not so used to dealing with UNIX ... but I was saving that for another question.

Hey Paul, I just tried this on a Win2k box, and it seems to work. Though, all it looks to do is append _collcutt on the end of every file(considering you never really remove anything from the exploded array). Is this the expected result? Is this being run from the same directory? You may want to try to pass full file paths and see if that helps.
You can try using
$path = getcwd()
// you script
rename($path.'\'.$file, $path.'\'.$new_file);

1) All the images on our site have the form:

nb_firstname_lastname_0000x.jpg

The problem was with the lastname so I split each $file on '_' into the array $new_file...

0: nb
1: firstname
2: lastname
3: 0000x.jpg

... fix the lastname, in this case ...

$new_file[2] = "collcutt";

... then join $new_file back together and use rename().

2) Yes, the php file was sitting in the same folder as the images ... I thought I'd start by placing it here first.

3) I'm at home now (winXP) so I'll have to test your getcwd() tomorrow.

Thanks again for any help on this one ... I've had to make the changes by hand this time, but I need to solve this problem for other reason anyway.

Using the path in rename() worked beautifully ... hat's off!

Before trying the same thing on the unix server ... are there any differences to doing it locally on win98?

The second probem I keep having is with permissions while creating folders/adding readable images to those folders.

What I need to be able to do is this:
When we take on a new artist, we need to create a new subfolder (for example: /images/fred_bloggs/ ) on the server that going to contain all of his/her images. I would like my colleagues to be able to do this online ... using a PHP-enabled form etc.

So, what I need to know is this:
What is the correct permission for the main /images/ folder, to allow new subfolders to be created within it, and for images to be written to (and read from ) the subfolders? Similarly, what are the permissions for the subfolders?
