[Resolved] "include" questions

I include a 'navbar' in all the files on a site. Some of the files are in subdirectories, and I can't do a base ref thingy, 'cos I can't touch some of the other included files ver easily....any ideas?

also, do lots of includes slow a page down? ie if I have a file included in a file, and then that included in another etc

don't really understand your problem but:

//index.php
include("x/index2.php");

//x/index2.php
include("index3.php");
//or
// include("./x/index3.php");

// x/index3.php
echo "something";

include doesn't slow down loading, because file size is same

You can either change all the files to look for the included file in the correct relative spot, copy the included file to every directory, or put something like this in your code

if ( file_exists($include) ){
               include($include);
           }elseif (file_exists("../".$include)){
                include("../".$include);
           }

on all your pages.

glad includes don't slow things down!

I'm afraid I didn't explain myself very well. It's the links within the include I'm struggling with. If I just include it from a file in a subdirectory, the links don't work, as they're looking in that subdirectory for files in the sites root.

probably me being braindead due to lack of sleep trying to finish another project...

the code i provide checks in local dir. for file, then in dir. above for the included file.

If you need to make it 2 dir. deep, then put another elseif on the end.

oh hang on a mo...just got back to this to see that it doesn't quite do what I want. Prob me being obscure, but the code I need is to go within the included file so that the links in it go to the right place, no matter what file calls it in...

You want to include a file, and that included file contains links to other files?
And no matter from what location the included file is called, you want the links to remain the same?

Well...you could always use a static URL to those files;
c:/www/folder/file.xxx

Or...pass a variable containing the relative link the those files.

I've had a decent night's sleep now, and can think again...

of course, yes a variable containing the base URL (which will change, depending on whether I have it on my testing server or live, and whether I use the same code for other sites) contained in the links.

D'oh! dunno why I couldn't think of that!
