Shorten URL

Hey

I have a $data string with an article inside it.

I need to find the URL's and convert them to HTML links.

I also need to shorten the URL displayed if it is longer than 50 characters.

Anyone have the solution?

Please help me I am stuck and been for days!

Post a few examples of the $data strings, and then what you want the converted bit to look like, which will give a clue as to what is needed.
